Cape Kiwanda – Original Oil
8x8" Original Oil on Panel
This painting was done en plein air on the Oregon Coast. Years of wind, driving rain, and pounding surf, have created fascinating featured along the steep wall of Cape Kiwanda. Though situated immediately next to a very impressive Haystack Rock I could not convince myself to paint anything but this dynamic cape. I just the hour that I painted it, the light from the moving sun and subsequent shadows moved, changed shape, and even color. It was a thrill to paint it and am tempted to do it all over again on my next visit!
Illuminated Meadows – Original Painting
5x7 Original Oil Painting on Glacier Silt Panel.
This painting was completed near the base of Mount Hood, Oregon during the Pacific Northwest Plein Air 2012. When I arrived to this painting location I was overwhelmed with the beauty. After 15 minutes of standing in awe I finally decided on this brilliantly illuminated stand of tress juxtaposed against a beautiful alpine meadow. What a beautiful place! Big thanks go out to the fellow artists who shared their secret spot! :)
The panel that I selected to paint this on is primed with a thick layer of hand mixed gesso that includes glacier silt that I harvested from the Knik Arm a couple miles from my home in Wasilla, Alaska. The Glacier silt provides a beautiful deep grey base with a consistent, absorbent, and toothy quality for my works.
Parts And Labour – Original Oil
"Parts+Labour" Plein Air 8x10 oil on Glacier Silt Panel.
Every time I visit Hood River, Oregon I am drawn to the beautiful windows of this chic little shop in Downtown. My favorite time to take in their window display is at night when everything 'pop's with dramatic lighting. I had every intention of purchasing this little red number in the window but by the time I made it back during business hours it was gone! It was beautiful!
Stevenson Goose – Original Oil
"Stevenson Goose" Plein Air 5x5" Oil on Panel
This Canada Goose was contently sunning itself on a log in Rock Cove - Stevenson, Washington. As it often does, the wind in the Columbia River Gorge was strong and blustery as I sat on the craggy shore and painted this beautiful bird.

Marina Melody – Original Oil
"Marina Melody" Original Oil en Plein Air • 8x16" on Linen Panel. This was a very planned out painting. During the course of the Pacific Northwest Plein Air 2011 I had envisioned how I would approach this subject. On the day I was to paint the scene I made sure to carefully predict the sun's path and align my painting location with the optimum viewpoint. Arriving about an hour before the sun began it's light show, I was able to capture the anatomy of the scene. By blocking in all the boats, masts and their rigging first I was free to focus on the color as the sun dipped near the western horizon. I still remember the calming sound of the water lapping at the docks and the rigging chiming and clanging in the breeze. What a beautiful evening!

Had the wonderful opportunity to spend a day at the beach with an artist friend. We enjoyed the Maui sun and sand while we painted. So fun! On the horizon you can see Molokini Crater (World class snorkel spot) and Kahoolawe Island beyond. The dark band on the beach is where high tide and perhaps large swells from a storm had washed debris and rock onto the beach. As an artist it is fun to dissect scenes. I was mesmerized by the colors of the sand from the shadows, to the debris and then where the waves continually wiped the beach clean of footprints and blemishes. The gradients of blue to green in the ocean was also captivating!

Life Within – Original Oil Painting
Heat and gasses pour endlessly skyward from the Pu'u 'Ō'ō vent of Kilauea Volcano in Volcanoes National Park on the Big Island of Hawaii. The light emitted from this fascinating eruption never ceases to inspire me. I am obsessed with it's beauty.

Curtain Of Fire – Original Oil
This Kilauea fissure eruption of the Pu'u 'Ō'ō vent occurred in early 2011 on the Big Island of Hawai'i. It fascinated me how immense pressure forced the molten rock skyward only to drain into a nearby crevice. The light emitting from the lava and the resulting drama are so inspiring!

“Orca Sunrise” Original Oil

Karen Whitworth has used her passionate interpretation of light to depict this enchanting scene. Sunlight pierces through the clouds brilliantly illuminating an icy Alaskan seascape. By any other method this scene would leave the viewer feeling cold, but through her use of intense and warm colors Karen has welcomed the viewer into the warm embrace of an Alaskan sunrise. Under the icy ocean surface light dances through the depths and on the slick skin of two Orcas. The whales weave through the shafts of radiant light and around frozen bergs as they go about their day; as if this grand and brilliant sight is a daily occurrence... In Alaska, it is.
