This painting was inspired by my first snorkeling experience. My husband and I could not believe the amount of life and explosive color that existed below the waves off the Maui coast. What beauty! To top it all off we were joined by this gentle Green Sea Turtle. His movements were so graceful. He glided effortlessly through the crystal clear water and didn't seem to mind us as company. Definitely something I will never forget.

“Morning Glory” Holy Rosary Church, Maui – Print

My husband and I were blessed to go to Maui November of 2008. It was our first time. What an incredibly beautiful place! This painting was from a church we stopped at on our way down Haleakala volcano at sunrise.(A must do if you ever go to Maui) The sun had just rose above the volcano summit projecting the most beautiful glow on this statue of Mary.

Every time I visit the Big Island of Hawaii I make it a point to visit Kilauea. This place humbles me. Such power! Words cannot describe it and even photos cannot fully capture it. In this painting I have depicted a surface flow meandering down the slopes of Kilauea and into the sea. The original painting included a texture relief of black sand from the Kalapana area. Pua Melia, or pink plumeria are one of the flowers most associated with paradise. Their fragrance alone is enough to immediately transport someone to the tropics. Here a flowering plumeria branch serves as a perch to an Amakihi bird. Perhaps he is stopping to smell the flowers.

Near downtown Hilo, Hawai'i Rainbow Falls sits nestled into the lush tropical hillside. Tropical Bird of Paradise flowers line scenes' edge illuminated by the last light of the day. As these waning shafts of sunlight pour over the top of Rainbow Falls they set the misty air aglow.

First Light – Nene Bird & Ohelo Berries – Print

Featuring the State Bird of Hawaii, the Nene, this painting catches a pair resting along a volcanic rock ledge. With Ohelo bushes all around they are content to enjoy the morning light as it peeks over the lava outcropping. Sunlight illuminates them and the vegetation. This is "First Light".

When fiery volcanic forces leave the Hawaiian landscape gray and barren it is the Ohia Lehua tree that is first to return. To see this plant not only survive but prosper in this largely inhospitable environment inspires hope. Here an Iiwi bird poses brilliantly as it balances on a flowering Ohia branch.

Curtain of Fire – Kiluea Volcano Print
This Kilauea fissure eruption of the Pu'u 'Ō'ō vent occurred in early 2011 on the Big Island of Hawai'i. It fascinated me how immense pressure forced the molten rock skyward only to drain into a nearby crevice. The light emitting from the lava and the resulting drama are so inspiring!

Had the wonderful opportunity to spend a day at the beach with an artist friend. We enjoyed the Maui sun and sand while we painted. So fun! On the horizon you can see Molokini Crater (World class snorkel spot) and Kahoolawe Island beyond. The dark band on the beach is where high tide and perhaps large swells from a storm had washed debris and rock onto the beach. As an artist it is fun to dissect scenes. I was mesmerized by the colors of the sand from the shadows, to the debris and then where the waves continually wiped the beach clean of footprints and blemishes. The gradients of blue to green in the ocean was also captivating!
