Hawaiian Sunset – “Through The Vog”
Something that is unique to Hawaii and especially the Big Island is Vog. Essentially it is volcanic smog, tiny particles that are released into the air from Kilauea as it continually erupts. This vog hugs the horizon and can make or break a sunset. On the day I saw this sunset, it most definitely ‘made’ it.
The dark band of haze intersecting the sun as it hangs near the horizon is vog.
For this painting I am using another one of my handy slate panels. It is so fun starting with a dark neutral surface and laying that first stroke of light onto the panel.

I strain to lay a stroke down and leave it. The very nature of this material begs to be host to intentional strokes of light.
