A Commissioned Journey – Part 2

In early 2009 I was commissioned to create 2 large paintings for a vacation residence on the Big Island of Hawaii. Quite the experience!
This Painting “Red Garden”, features a dense growth of Hawaiian Red Ginger bushes with an old red dirt path winding through them. The clients were wonderful in selecting and communicating the theme for these paintings. A true pleasure to work with!
“The journey of TWO thousand miles begins with a single step”
What do you know? Another giant blank canvas, we better do something about that!

Thanks to some well planned reference material this painting went on mostly without a hitch, but boy did I underestimate the time it would take me!
Here it is about two thirds done. I really enjoyed building the intense jewel tones in the foliage, glazing and re-glazing each leaf. This method allowed me to maintain high pigment saturation in the shadows as well as the highlights. I used very little white to avoid the colors from becoming milky or chalky. Many long days and late nights but it was well worth the effort.
…And here is the finished painting.
So…. now I have 2 giant paintings in Alaska that need to get to Hawaii…
